On a summer night in California a stadium sits full. Thousands of people sing along to the music of a band to which, many of them, is unknown. Cameras are rolling and just before the end of the night hundreds of them are walking to the podium. The faces in the stadium are full of rejoicing and some even tears. This is typical night for a Harvest Crusade.
The Harvest Crusades are evangelistic events founded in 1990 by Pastor Greg Laurie. These large scale evangelistic outreaches work with local churches nationally and internationally. The idea was born by Greg Laurie’s desire to share with this generation that the questions that haunted him when he was younger are the same ones that people ask themselves now. And he has found the answers to those questions in his faith.
Laurie has an uncanny ability to apply principles from the Bible to current events in a way that is easy to understand and of relevance to this generation. His straightforward style and format of his sermons continues to attract people of all ages and all walks of life at his church and to his radio broadcast "A New Beginning".
The title of his radio broadcast is no coincidence: Laurie came from a broken home and an environment of drugs and alcohol when he was younger. Overcoming many of his own prejudices about the church and the Christian culture he became a Christian during high school under the ministry, of then youth pastor with Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa, Lonnie Frisbee. That marked Greg Laurie’s life. He had changed dramatically even though he would never forget where he came from or the questions about life that he used to have. It was his "New Beginning".
Not long after he became a Christian he started a Bible Study with 30 people. That small Bible study group is now one of the largest churches in the United States, Harvest Christian Fellowship. He continues to reach the world with host television program "Knowing God with Greg Laurie" and by making appearances on National Television reinforcing that the Bible is still relevant.
Greg Laurie has also authored several best-selling books including "The Upside-Down Church", "Losers and Winners", "Saints and Sinners" and "The Best Is Yet to Come". He contributed with notes for the "New Believer's Bible" and "The Seeker's Bible" and is a guest commentator for Word Net Daily and Trinity Broadcasting Network.
There is no doubt that Greg Laurie will carry on with his ministry reaching the nations and people from every walk of life with his testimony and the good news of Gospel in years to come.
